Pennisetum advena ‘Rubrum’

More commonly called ‘Purple Fountain Grass’.  It is a beautiful grass with long narrow, dark burgundy-red to bronze coloured, upright to arching foliage throughout spring, summer and autumn; turning a rustic straw colour in winter. Rubrum is a quick growing grass ideal for screening and feature planting in the garden.

Dimensions: Height: 1.5mm |  Width:  1m – 1.5m
Flowering: From mid spring to autumn it displays an eye catching, burgundy to cream foxtail like flowers above the foliage.
Aspect: Full sun position is best to bring out the rich foliage colour, but it can be grown in part shade where it will tend to be more open. Will tolerate humidity and heat and is best suited to a protected coastal aspect. Rubrum will grow in inland climates but will burn off under frost with the foliage re-shooting again in spring.
Soil type: Best planted in fertile loams, clay loam and light clay soils. Rubrum will grow in moist free draining soils
Planting rates: Mass planting: Tubes 3 to 5/m2. Pots 1 to 3/m2 | Specimen planting: Pots 1/m2

Maintenance: Trim back annually to 200- 400mm above ground, in early spring to remove last season’s foliage and spent flowers. Fertilize with a controlled release fertilizer after trimming and water well to encourage fresh re-growth.
