Gardenia augusta – Florida

With their lovely, soft scented blooms appearing from late spring to early summer, and their soft creamy white colour, is it any wonder that Gardenias (Gardenia spp.) have become firm favourites with Australian gardeners. There are many different perennial varieties available from ground covers to standards, or the well sized bushes that can be turned into loose hedges. There is a Gardenia out there for every garden type.

Uses: Ideal for hedges, massed planting or as a single specimen.

Dimensions: Height: 0.75cm – 1 metres |  Width: 1m

Flowering: They flower at their best in the warmer months of the year usually from November to May with extremely fragrant double white blooms with glossy green foliage.

Aspect: Gardenias can handle full sun, but need protection from baking midday or afternoon sun in higher growing zones. North and east-facing exposures are ideal because they will receive bright morning light and some midday light, but won’t be in full sun all day or during the absolute heat of the day.
Soil type: Gardenias prefer a rich, moist soil that is slightly acidic. The soil must also be free draining as they will not tolerate waterlogging
Planting rates:

Maintenance: Low Maintenance, Mulch and water well, prune after flowering . Plant in a soil which is medium to acidic for best results. Feed with a fertiliser for acid-loving plants every 2-3 months. Water regularly with seaweed solution. Spray with Eco-Oil to kill aphids, scale, and other pests.
