Sporobolous virginicus – ’Sand Couch’

’Sand Couch’ or ‘Marine Couch’, is a low growing, rhizomatous or stoloniferous grass that is often mistaken for couch grass. Sporobolous can be found growing in sand dunes, the shore line of coastal lakes, littoral zones and salt marshes often growing within the tidal zone where it forms dense mats of grass. Large grass with green, upright to arching foliage.

Uses: Dune reclamation, coastline protection, grazing, alternative to lawn grass on saline, intermittently waterlogged soils where so few plants can grow


Dimensions: Height: 200mm – 300mm;  Spreads by rhizomes and stolons to carpet the ground over large areas

Flowering: Flowers over summer with short, narrow, branching

Aspect: Full sun and up to 50% shade. Naturally occurs in sand dunes and on the edge of saline water lakes, salt marshes and coastal foreshores. It can handle tidal inundation
Soil type: Suited to a wide range, from sand and sand dunes to boggy salt marshes
Planting rates: Tubes: 5 to 7 per m2

Maintenance: It can be mown like traditional turf grasses to encourage lateral growth.
