Themeda australis ‘Mingo’

A prostrate form of Kangaroo grass with blue foliage. Mingo’s rustic appearance contrasts well with other plants, grasses and strappy leafed plants. Prostrate, blue foliage.

Large grass with green, upright to arching foliage.

Uses: Great border and ground cover plant and can even be trained as an informal lawn.


Dimensions: Height: 200mm – 300mm |  Width: 500mm – 600mm

Flowering: Late spring and throughout summer with rusty red/brown prostrate seed heads. Mingo has non-viable seeds 

Aspect: Full sun and up to 50% shade. It can be planted in frontline coastal aspects; however it will look best in sheltered coastal aspects. Suited to inland climates, but will brown off under frost with fresh growth shooting again in spring. Mingo is very drought tolerant.
Soil type: A wide range from loam, clay loam and free draining clay.
Planting rates: Mass planting; Tubes 5 to 7/m2. Pots 3 to 5/m2. Specimen planting: Tubes 3/m2, Pots 1 to 3/m2Informal Lawns: Plant Tubes @ 200mm centres. This will encourage a dense foliage cover that will knit together to form a lawn effect.

Maintenance: Trim back foliage by 2/3 annually in spring to re-fresh the foliage. Fertilize with slow release fertilizer after trimming. Mow regularly to train the lawn.
